Dear Reader,

The ASIAN STUDIES WWW MONITOR
(including all its subsidiary (and/or sister) pages on "coombs.anu.edu.au" server) has permanently ceased its publishing operations on Friday 21st January 2011.

All of the online resources reported here have been thoroughly checked at the time of their listing. However, it is possible that, with the with the passage of time, many of the originally reported materials might have been removed from the Internet, or changed their online address, or varied the scope and quality of their contents.

Fortunately, in several cases it is possible to access many of the older versions of the resources listed in the MONITOR. This can be easily done via the free services of the "The Internet Archive" http://web.archive.org/, a remarkable brainchild of Brewster Kahle, San Francisco, CA.

- with warm regards -

Editor, Dr T. Matthew Ciolek.

5star
23 Nov 2006

Tibetan & Himalayan Digital Library (THDL), University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, US.

Self-description (1): "The Gazetteer is designed to provide information about all varieties of places in Tibet and the Himalayas, in past and present times - nations, provinces, counties, monasteries, villages, mountains, natural regions and more. The current 2.0 [i.e. Oct/Nov 2006 - ed.] release includes administrative units in contemporary China that have ethnic Tibetan populations, with detailed information only for the subunits of the Tibet Autonomous Region. We are now working on release 3.0 which will include details for all five provinces in China with Tibetan populations, and all politicial districts of Nepal as well. In the subsequent phase we will begin to incorporate our extensive data on Tibetan monasteries. [...] Note: You will need a Unicode font to view the Chinese characters, and another Unicode font to view Tibetan words.

Self-description (2): "We are now in the final weeks of the release of the first major update of the Gazetteer in three years. This new version will have much more rapid searching, display of Tibetan script and Devangari script as well as Chinese characters, improved interface, and a lot of improvements in the technology that will allow us from the fall of 2006 to finally begin to put all of our content into it. In addition, it will have administrative units for contemporary Nepal, as well as add all contemporary administrative units for Tibetan areas of Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu and Yunan, in addition to the earlier data for the Tibet Autonomous Region."
