Dear Reader,

The ASIAN STUDIES WWW MONITOR
(including all its subsidiary (and/or sister) pages on "coombs.anu.edu.au" server) has permanently ceased its publishing operations on Friday 21st January 2011.

All of the online resources reported here have been thoroughly checked at the time of their listing. However, it is possible that, with the with the passage of time, many of the originally reported materials might have been removed from the Internet, or changed their online address, or varied the scope and quality of their contents.

Fortunately, in several cases it is possible to access many of the older versions of the resources listed in the MONITOR. This can be easily done via the free services of the "The Internet Archive" http://web.archive.org/, a remarkable brainchild of Brewster Kahle, San Francisco, CA.

- with warm regards -

Editor, Dr T. Matthew Ciolek.

Hepburn Japanese-English-Japanese Dictionary Online

Meiji Gakuin University Library Digital Archives, Meiji Gakuin University, Tokyo and Kanagawa, Japan

Supplied note:
"'James Curtis Hepburn' (Waegoi rinshuusei) is now available online at [the URL below] as part of the Digital Archives of Meiji Gakuin University.
The two sections -- Japanese-English and English-Japanese -- are a rich source for expressions current in Meiji Japan. Members of this list may sometimes find it useful to check the dictionary for information about older usages.

The sections of the dictionary have been digitzed and are available as graphic images. With a good internet connection, these will load quickly, and can be navigated so that you can browse through the dictionaries.

There is a basic search function. Note that you should choose first the 'EiWa no bu' or 'WaEi no bu.' The search function does not cover words in definitions, but simply gets to the page where -- alphabetically -- you might *expect* to find the headword.

Graphic digitization has certain advantages as well as disadvantages over electronic texts. All the rubi and rare characters can be displayed in a graphic text, for example, which is not always possible in an electronic text, even with Unicode. - mw."

Pictorial Collection on Muslims in Western China in the 1920s and 1930s

09 May 2006

The Rev. Claude L. Pickens, Jr. Collection on Muslims in China

The Harvard College Library, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, US.

Self-description:
"Over 1000 photos of Muslims and Christian missionaries working among them in Western China in the 1920s and 1930s form the core of this collection, which is supplemented by several hundred books, pamphlets, broadsides, etc., in several languages. Gift of Rev. Claude L. Pickens, Jr. in memory of Joseph Fletcher Professor of Chinese and Inner Asian History at Harvard University. The albums and photographs can be viewed in the VIA online catalog. A finding aid to the printed materials can be viewed in the OASIS online catalog. [...]

[Site contents:]
* Biographical Note * Islam in China: A Selected Bibliography of English-Language Publications * Finding Aid to the Collection * View the Photographs in the VIA Catalog."

Supplied note:
"[The site] is the culmination of a two-year project to catalog and digitize some 1000 photos of China's Muslim population in western China in the 1920s and 1930s and the activities of Christian missionaries working among them. Much of what appears in the photographs has been reported to have been lost or destroyed. The related finding aid to printed material in the collection points to an extensive collection of materials related to Islam in general and Islam in China in particular. We hope that in another year or so to be able to digitize some of the more obscure print materials to make them viewable on-line through a page-turner system. When we created the finding aid, the system could not accept Chinese or Arabic script, so the records appear in romanization only. Some of the printed materials (particularly, posters) also appear in the image catalog (VIA). This is the second of a continuing series of digital projects for visual images of East Asia. We will soon add several hundred Hedda Morrison photos of Hong Kong (1946-47) that were the focus of our 2005 publication (with a foundation in Hong Kong) 'Hedda Morrison's Hong Kong: Photographs & Impressions,1946-47', written by Edward Stokes. We will soon also catalog and digitize some 500 photographs relating to the Chinese Maritime Customs Service (under various pre-1911 and post-1911) names - rl."
