Dear Reader,

The ASIAN STUDIES WWW MONITOR
(including all its subsidiary (and/or sister) pages on "coombs.anu.edu.au" server) has permanently ceased its publishing operations on Friday 21st January 2011.

All of the online resources reported here have been thoroughly checked at the time of their listing. However, it is possible that, with the with the passage of time, many of the originally reported materials might have been removed from the Internet, or changed their online address, or varied the scope and quality of their contents.

Fortunately, in several cases it is possible to access many of the older versions of the resources listed in the MONITOR. This can be easily done via the free services of the "The Internet Archive" http://web.archive.org/, a remarkable brainchild of Brewster Kahle, San Francisco, CA.

- with warm regards -

Editor, Dr T. Matthew Ciolek.

Canberra, 21 January 2011.

Chinese Unicorn - all about the Zhi (a 2008 e-book by Jeannie Thomas Parker)

24 Feb 2009

www.chinese-unicorn.com, Brea, CA, US.

Self-description:
"A Web site containing a full-length book about the Chinese unicorn throughout history, as well as a blog [...] This is the first book published in the English language to explore the origin and significance of the mythic Chinese unicorn and its influence on later unicorn myths. It proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the Chinese unicorn was *not* the 'qilin', but a one-horned female goat-like beast called the 'zhi'. It also examines the real animals upon which the myth was based. Its most significant finding, however, is that the unicorn 'zhi' was the ultimate symbol of justice under the law in ancient China."

Japanese Student Movement Printed Materials, 1959-2003, bulk 1960-1979

06 Feb 2009

Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library, Duke University, Durham, NC, US.

Self-description:
"Collection [72 Linear Feet, 3000 Items - ed.] consists of Japanese books, periodicals and other printed materials relating to the Japanese student movement of the 1960s and later. The materials derive from the first confrontations of 1960 provoked by the Anpo treaty, through the protest movement's years of crisis and decay in the 1970s, but there are more recent materials as well. Original order of groupings arranged by format has been retained; within groupings, materials are in date order with a few exceptions. Items of interest include radical left-wing student newspapers, large flyers and smaller protest handouts, special issues from mainstream media outlets, clippings, and North Korean and former Soviet Union Communist propaganda. Notably, the collection includes a full 12-month run of the Japanese magazine, Kisetsu. Protest movement ephemera also includes original writings, chiefly mimeographed essays and manuscript submissions for publication. The collection is strong in material relating to the BUND movement (Kyosan Shugisha Domei), the rise of Zengakuren radicalism, and the birth of the Japanese Red Army Faction (Sekigun-Ha). Materials and this collection guide are in the Japanese language. Romanized titles are given for books and serials. Part of the collection's original printed material was featured in the landmark "1960s Graphism" exhibit curated by the Tokyo Printing Museum (Insatsu Hakubutsukan) in 2002. Other visual material of interest is available in the dedicated issues of Asahi Graph and Shiso included in the collection. The collection is part of a larger gift pertaining to the radicalization of the student movement in Japan, including books which are available as part of the holdings of the East Asian Collection in Duke University's Perkins Library. Searching the subject headings below will bring up these and other related titles."

Historical Photographs of China

Historical Photographs of China project, School of Humanities, University of Bristol, UK & Institut d'Asie Orientale (IAO), Lyon, France

Self-description:
"A collaboration between scholars at the University of Bristol [http://www.bristol.ac.uk/], University of Lincoln [http://www.bristol.ac.uk/], and the Institut d'Asie Orientale [http://iao.ish-lyon.cnrs.fr/francais/index.html], this project aims to locate, archive, and disseminate photographs from the substantial holdings of images of modern China held mostly in private hands overseas. These are often of even greater historic interest than might ordinarily be the case, as the destruction of materials inside China in war and revolution in the twentieth century, and especially during the 1966-69 Cultural Revolution, means that there is a relative dearth today of accessible photographic records in China itself. [...]

The photographs archived here come from the collections of a Chinese diplomat, foreign businessmen, staff of the administrations in the Chinese treaty ports, missionaries, and officials of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service. They shed light on political events such as the 1925 May Thirtieth incident, on working and social life, on treaty port architecture, commercial history, the history of dress and fashion, and of course the history of photography in China. They were taken by talented amateur photographers, by foreign snap-shotters, professional studio photographers, and others. These images were taken, acquired or bought by those living or visiting China.

These digital copies of the images are made available here for educational, reference and research purposes. As well as a variety of modestly sized collections, this project has worked with a number of larger bodies of material including photographs related to the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, diplomat Foo Ping-sheung (Fu Bingchang), holdings relating to the Shanghai Municipal Police, the G. Warren Swire collection, and the J.C. Oswald collection (SOAS)."

Supplied note:
"May I recommend that you look at the Historical Photographs of China. Many of the photographs were taken by Fu Bingchang, the last ambassador Chiang Kaishek sent to Soviet Russia. Fu was a keen amateur photographer, and he captured hundreds of images of Kuomintang society during the 1920s to 1940s. Virtually none of them have been seen or published.- ywf."

The SAT Daizokyo Text Database

The SAT Daizokyo Text Database Committee, Dept. of Indian Philosophy
and Buddhist Studies, Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology,
University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan.

Self-description:
"Humanity's repository of the Buddhist wisdom: the full text of 85 volumes of Taisho Shinshu Daizokyo [...], is now available on-line. [...] The SAT Daizokyo Text Database Committee opens this data for public use with the full approval of Daizo Shuppan Kabushiki Kaisha, the original publisher of the Taisho Shinshu Daizokyo."

Supplied-note:
"[...A]s a scholar of Daoism and early medieval Chinese Religion - I would like to recommend [...] websites [listed below] not only for the obvious use of locating citations from religious scriptures, but because they can function as the much needed but not available 'dictionary' for the often obtruse and undocumented language used in early medieval texts. A parallel search in contemporary texts from the Buddhist Canon and the Daoists canon more often than not clarifies the meaning of difficult words and expressions and helps to contextualize them at the same time.

The site of the 'Taisho Daizokyo' allows full text searches of the Buddhist canon as well as of specified parts of it. [...]
While the complete 'Daozang' to my knowledge is not yet searcheable online, the Academia Sinica has 21 volumes out of 60 - and in particular many of the early medieval texts in the 'Daozang', in a searcheable full text database.

http://www.sinica.edu.tw/~tdbproj/handy1/

This is the list of the Academica Sinica database. Somewhere in the middle of the list is the link to the 'Zhengtong daozang' database. It is quite strong on pre-Tang scriptures. The menu has an option to show several levels of the titles - clicking 2 in the title box gets the list of all the texts contained on the screen.
And last but not least, with a much more limited number of texts, but containing such useful things as the 'Yunqi qijian', 'Daojiao Yishu' and more, and very fast and great to use is the database of some texts from the 'Daozang' on the Dokisha homepage:

http://www.zinbun.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~dokisha/kanseki.html

Page references are to the standard edition of the Zhentong Daozang, while the 'Academia Sinica' website mentioned before refers to the 60 vol. Taiwanese edition. - fa."
