Dear Reader,

The ASIAN STUDIES WWW MONITOR
(including all its subsidiary (and/or sister) pages on "coombs.anu.edu.au" server) has permanently ceased its publishing operations on Friday 21st January 2011.

All of the online resources reported here have been thoroughly checked at the time of their listing. However, it is possible that, with the with the passage of time, many of the originally reported materials might have been removed from the Internet, or changed their online address, or varied the scope and quality of their contents.

Fortunately, in several cases it is possible to access many of the older versions of the resources listed in the MONITOR. This can be easily done via the free services of the "The Internet Archive" http://web.archive.org/, a remarkable brainchild of Brewster Kahle, San Francisco, CA.

- with warm regards -

Editor, Dr T. Matthew Ciolek.

Ivory Towers on Sand: The Failure of Middle Eastern Studies in America [free E-Book]

Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Washington DC, US.

Self-description:
"Seven years ago this week, The Washington Institute for Near East Policy published my book [Martin S. Kramer, 2001] 'Ivory Towers on Sand: The Failure of Middle Eastern Studies in America' [137pp, ISBN: 0944029493 - ed.]. I'm pleased to announce that as of this morning [23 October 2008 - ed.], and for the first time, the entire book is available from the Institute as a free download (pdf). [...]

The book appeared six weeks after 9/11 (here's [http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9807E7D61F30F930A35752C1A9679C8B63] the 'New York Times' report of its publication), and had a much greater impact than I imagined it would when I wrote it. The Institute and I hope that by making it freely available, 'Ivory Towers on Sand' will live yet another life, especially among today's university and college students. If you are a student or know a student, share the link. If you are in a Middle East course, send the link to your classmates and ask your professor to discuss the book in class. If you are a faculty member, it's now easy to include the book in your next syllabus. (It should definitely be in the syllabus of any course that assigns Zachary Lockman's 'Contending Visions of the Middle East' [Contending Visions of the Middle East: The History and Politics of Orientalism. 2004. Cambridge U. Press. ISBN: 0521629373) - ed.], where 'Ivory Towers' is critiqued over half a dozen pages. Students should be encouraged to read both books and form their own opinion.) [...]

For emailing convenience, here is the url: http://washingtoninstitute.org/download.php?file=IvoryTowers.pdf - Martin Kramer. "

Table of Contents:
Acknowledgments; Preface; Introduction; An American Invention; Said's Splash; Islam Obscured; Misstating the State; The Beltway Barrier; The Cultivation of Irrelevance; Conclusion: When Gods Fail; Appendix; Index.

Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore, Singapore.

Self-description:
"The Chang'an project is headed by Professor Heng Chye Kiang and a team of researchers including Ms. Gan Ser Min, at the Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore. It originated in 1994 as a research project to model digitally the cityscapes of two of the most important cities of the Tang and Song periods - Chang 'an (618 - 907 CE) and Suzhou (960 - 1279 CE). The project aimed at providing visual, formal, and spatial information critical to the understanding of the development of Chinese cities. Using primary and secondary sources like archaeological reports, period paintings, funerary objects, literary documents, extant architectural examples and current knowledge as the basic for interpreting the cityscape of Chang'an individual buildings and compounds were created and combined to form the city. The result is the creation of visual information never before available. [...] Chang'an was the capital of Tang period China (618- 907 CE). At its peak, it had a population of about one million. Measuring 9.7 by 8.6 kilometres, the plan of this large city inspired the planning of many other capital cities in East Asia including Heijo-kyo and Heian-kyo in Japan in the 8th century. Join us as we take a [multimedia - ed.] walk through this majestic city. [...] [U]sers can choose to visit no less than 13 unique locations within the historic city. These include official buildings such as the Linde and Hanyuan Halls, religious complexes, residential wards, architectural landmarks and commercial markets among others. Each part of the tour consists of an introductory description of the location followed by slides, digital images and a guided 'walk through'. The embedded animation sequences allow users to experience visually the spatial and formal matrix of the ancient city."

Global Aging Initiative (GAI) [Demographic shifts in Japan, China, and Korea]

Global Aging Initiative (GAI)

Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Washington, DC, US.

Self-description:
"GAI remains optimistic that informed leaders and voters will confront the challenge of global aging. But it also warns that the problem is worse than is generally supposed - and that the time for corrective action is running out.
What is Global Aging? For most of human history, until about a century ago, the elderly (people aged 65 and over) never amounted to more than 2 or 3 percent of the population. Today, in the developed world, they amount to 15 percent. By the year 2030, they will be around 25 percent. As recently as 1980, the median age of the oldest society on earth (Sweden) was 36. By the year 2030, the median age of the entire developed world is projected to be 45. In Japan and much of southern and eastern Europe, it will be over 50. As a whole, the developing world will remain much younger for the foreseeable future. Yet it too is aging - hence the term 'global aging.' Several major countries in East Asia and Latin America, including China, South Korea, and Mexico are projected to reach developed-world levels of old-age dependency by the middle of the century."

Summer Institute of Linguistics Philippines (SIL), Manila, Philippines.

Self-description:
"Founded over 70 years ago, SIL International is a faith-based organization that studies, documents, and assists in developing the world's lesser-known languages. SIL's staff shares a Christian commitment to service, academic excellence, and professional engagement through literacy, linguistics, translation, and other academic disciplines. SIL makes its services available to all without regard to religious belief, political ideology, gender, race, or ethnic background. SIL (initially known as the Summer Institute of Linguistics) has grown from a small summer linguistics training program with two students in 1934 to a staff of over 5,000 coming from over 60 countries. SIL's linguistic investigation exceeds 1,800 languages spoken by over 1.2 billion people in more than 70 countries."

Supplied note:
"The SIL Philippines web site now has almost 500 academic and vernacular items in more than 70 Filipino languages available for free download. Go to: [the URL below] The academic items include all issues of Studies in Philippine Linguistics (SIPL), selected issues of Studies in Philippine Languages & Cultures (SPLC), 10-ICAL abstracts and/or papers, some out-of-print academic publications, as well as links to papers by SIL personnel on other web sites.
The vernacular items available are languages from "A to K-Kankanaey". As the materials in languages from "K-Kankanay, Northern to Z" are scanned, they also will be added. These include literacy primers & readers, four-language phrase books, health materials, Pilgrim's Progress, Tariri story.
Presently the publication date of each item is not listed in the general information. We will be adding this, however, as some of these materials are quite old and in some cases the orthography used is not that recommended now. However, the materials remain of value.
As SIL Philippines continues to make such material available, we welcome your comments, corrections, and suggestions. - Sue McQuay."

About the Project Report - Major powers in East Asia are undergoing important political leadership transitions. In China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, a new generation is emerging, equipped with unique experiences and backgrounds. Exploring how these future leaders are likely to respond to regional trends and anticipating their policy preferences as they assume increasingly important leadership positions is critical to a well-grounded understanding of Northeast Asia in the 21st century. This report represents the culmination of a year-long initiative launched by NBR to provide U.S. government and corporate leaders with a better understanding of East Asia's future leadership. By examining the qualities and characteristics that define these rising leaders and distinguish them from their predecessors, the initiative explores the possible implications of their emerging influence for U.S. foreign, economic, and security policy interests.
